WHY “ADONI”
In the Old Testament, whenever the name of God is encountered in the Bible, the Jews
see YHWH in Hebrew, which is an unpronounceable word, and the Bible has the word
LORD.   The Hebrew letters for the name for God, YHWH, is where we get the idea that
the name of God is Yahweh.  Instead of reading “Yahweh,” the Jews read, “Lord.”  The
Hebrew word for Lord is “adonay.”
When the names of people or places are formed and the ones doing the naming want
the name of the Lord to be part of the name, they use the Hebrew word “adoni,” which is
an alternate form of the Hebrew word “adonay.”  For example, Solomon’s son was
named Adonijah.  The name Adonijah is composed of the two words “adoni” and “yah,”
which is a shortened form of the name of God.  As a result the name Adonijah means my
lord is YHWH.  In general, the word “adoni” is used to make sure something divine is part
of what is named.
In the New Testament and in modern day Christianity, the word “Lord” is used
interchangeably.  God is referred to as Lord and Jesus is referred to as Lord.
Adoni is part of the name of The Adoni Spiritual Formation Center for a specific reason.  It’
s meant to indicate that the Lord, meaning both God and Christ, are a part of everything
we do.  They are the focus of our worship and our work.  Similarly, the word “adoni” is
used instead of “adonay” in order to indicate that the Lord has been merged with us as
individuals and as a community.  In other words, we’re called Adoni because the Lord is
a part of who we are individually and collectively and the Lord is a part of everything we
will do.
WHY A “SPIRITUAL FORMATION CENTER”
When most people think of a church, they think of the building.  In reality, when the Bible
talks about the church, it is referring to the people.  The New Testament Greek word for
church is “ekklesia” and it means “the called out ones,” i.e. those who have been called
out of the world and into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.  As a result, the
church is the people, not the building.
As a result, the word “church” isn’t in our name because we, meaning the people are the
church.  The Adoni Spiritual Formation Center is the place where the church meets.  In
essence, it is a house of worship.
We’re called a “spiritual formation center” because spiritual formation is the focus of our
work.  Our focus is on helping people grow spiritually, i.e. helping their relationship with
God grow and develop and helping their lives become changed as a result of the
relationship.
In total, we’re called The Adoni Spiritual Formation Center because we’ve partnered with
the Lord (the “Adoni” part of our name) in order to deepen our relationship with him and to
be affected by the relationship (the “Spiritual Formation Center” part of the name).
